BBL® HEROic™ Consultation

About the Treatment

BBL HEROic Light Therapy is a noninvasive light-based treatment that uses carefully selected wavelengths of BroadBand Light to target unwanted brown pigment, sun damage, redness, and visible blood vessels. Unlike a traditional laser that delivers a single wavelength, BBL HEROic uses a broad spectrum of light that can be filtered and customized depending on the patient’s skin type and the specific concern being treated. Every BBL HEROic treatment at Refyne Medical Aesthetics and Wellness begins with a comprehensive skin assessment. The provider evaluates the patient’s skin type, pigmentation, redness, sun damage, treatment history, and individual goals before developing a customized treatment plan. Any new, changing, irregular, or suspicious skin lesions may require evaluation by a dermatologist before treatment, and routine skin cancer screening may be recommended when appropriate. Patients receive a detailed pre-treatment protocol by email immediately after booking so they know how to properly prepare their skin before their appointment.

At Refyne Medical Aesthetics and Wellness, we use Sciton BBL HEROic, the newest generation of Sciton’s BroadBand Light technology. BBL HEROic incorporates advanced technology designed to provide precise and consistent light delivery while allowing treatment parameters to be customized to the patient’s skin and individual concerns. Our provider, Dr. Brooklyn Buras, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC has completed advanced BBL training with Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr., a board-certified dermatologist who pioneered the use of pulsed light for full-face skin rejuvenation, invented the FotoFacial, and developed many of the BBL treatment protocols used today. This advanced training, combined with an understanding of light and laser theory, skin anatomy, and the interaction between different wavelengths and targets within the skin, allows each treatment to be individualized rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

During treatment, the provider selects the appropriate BBL filter, wavelength range, energy settings, and treatment technique based on the patient’s skin type and whether the treatment is targeting brown pigment, redness, visible vessels, or a combination of concerns. The skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared, protective eyewear is placed, and a clear coupling gel is applied before controlled pulses of light are delivered across the treatment area. BBL HEROic incorporates integrated cooling for patient comfort, and topical numbing is generally not required. Treatment is typically well tolerated and requires minimal downtime, although temporary redness, warmth, or darkening of treated brown spots may occur as the skin responds to treatment. Following the procedure, the provider reviews a detailed post-treatment protocol, and patients receive written aftercare instructions to support proper healing and protect their results. For patients who would benefit from addressing both pigmentation or redness and concerns such as fine lines, texture, collagen loss, or overall skin quality, BBL HEROic may also be combined with MOXI fractional laser skin resurfacing as part of a more comprehensive skin rejuvenation treatment plan.

What Does BBL HEROic Address?

BBL HEROic does more than improve the visible appearance of sun damage and redness. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that after a series of BroadBand Light treatments, gene-expression patterns in aged skin shifted to more closely resemble those found in younger skin. Researchers identified 1,293 genes whose expression became more youthful following treatment, suggesting that BBL may influence the skin at a molecular level in addition to producing visible cosmetic improvement. This research is especially meaningful at Refyne Medical Aesthetics and Wellness because Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr.—with whom our provider, Dr. Brooklyn Buras, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC completed advanced BBL training—was a co-author of the published study.

  • Face & Neck Rejuvenation: BBL HEROic can be used across the face and neck to address visible sun damage, brown spots, redness, and uneven skin tone. At Refyne Medical Aesthetics and Wellness, we approach facial rejuvenation comprehensively and treat the full face and neck together rather than treating the face in isolation, helping create a more consistent appearance between these highly visible areas.
  • Face, Neck & Chest Rejuvenation: Sun exposure and photoaging commonly extend beyond the face to the neck and décolletage. BBL HEROic can be extended to the chest to address brown spots, redness, and accumulated sun damage. Treatment options are available for the full face and neck, with the chest added for more comprehensive rejuvenation.
  • Body Treatments: BBL HEROic can also be used on areas of the body affected by sun damage, brown spots, redness, and uneven pigmentation, including the arms, hands, and legs when clinically appropriate. This allows treatment to extend beyond facial rejuvenation to areas where years of sun exposure may become increasingly visible.
  • Combination Face & Body Rejuvenation: For patients with multiple concerns, BBL HEROic may be combined with MOXI and SkinTyte for a more comprehensive approach to face and body rejuvenation. BBL HEROic targets unwanted pigment and redness, MOXI laser skin resurfacing focuses on fractional resurfacing and skin texture, and SkinTyte addresses skin laxity through deeper tissue heating and collagen remodeling. Combination treatments may be used on areas such as the face, neck, chest, arms, and legs depending on the patient’s skin and treatment goals.

Who Is a Candidate?

BBL HEROic is best for adults with lighter to medium skin tones who have sun damage, brown spots, redness, or visible vessels. It is less suitable for darker skin tones or for recently tanned skin, because light-based treatments carry a higher risk of pigment changes in these cases. MOXI may be a better choice for those patients. Treatment may be postponed during pregnancy, with recent sun exposure or self-tanner, with certain light-sensitizing medications, or with active skin infections. Suspicious lesions must be evaluated first.

The BBL HEROic Consultation

Your provider evaluates your skin type, the type and depth of pigment or redness, sun history, medications, and past treatments. Photos document your baseline. Your provider recommends a treatment series, the areas to treat, and whether combining BBL with MOXI or SkinTyte would help. Any spot that looks irregular is flagged for dermatology review.

What to Expect During Treatment

Treatment takes place in our office. Your skin is cleansed, protective eyewear is placed, and a thin layer of cool gel is applied. Your provider then delivers controlled pulses of light across the area. Integrated cooling keeps you comfortable, and most patients do not need numbing. Many describe the feeling as a warm snap, like a rubber band. A full-face treatment typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Recovery and Aftercare

Downtime is minimal. Mild redness and warmth usually fade within a few hours to a day. Treated brown spots darken and look like coffee grounds, then flake off over about 7 to 10 days. Avoid sun exposure, use sunscreen daily, and avoid picking at flaking spots. Your provider reviews the aftercare protocol, and you receive written instructions.

Results

Skin looks clearer and more even as the treated pigment sheds, usually within 1 to 2 weeks. A series of treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart is often recommended, depending on how much sun damage you have. Results can last a long time with sun protection. Because sun exposure and aging continue, periodic maintenance treatments help keep skin looking its best.

Why Choose Refyne for BBL HEROic?

Refyne uses Sciton’s newest-generation BBL HEROic platform. Dr. Brooklyn Buras, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC trained directly with Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr., who developed many of the BBL protocols used today. Treatments are individualized by filter, wavelength, and energy. Suspicious lesions are screened before treatment. BBL can be combined with MOXI and SkinTyte for complete skin rejuvenation.
