Medical Botox Injections are nonsurgical medical procedures that use a class of medications called neuromodulators formulated to treat certain medical conditions, such as excessive sweating, TMJ pain and teeth grinding, migraine headaches, shoulder and neck pain as well as rosacea and facial flushing.
Contents
Medical Botox injections are minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedures that work by blocking the release of acetylcholine and other signaling molecules from targeted nerve endings. Depending on the condition being treated, this can reduce excessive muscle contraction, gland activity, pain signaling, or in the case of rosacea and facial flushing, help modulate abnormal vasodilation and neurogenic inflammation that contributes to persistent redness and facial flushing.
The procedure begins with a comprehensive clinical assessment of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, individual anatomy, muscle activity when applicable, and treatment goals. Rather than following a one-size-fits all injection pattern, an individualized medical botox treatment plan is developed with dosing, injection sites, and tissue depth selected according to the condition being treated and the patient’s individual anatomy.
After the treatment area is cleansed and prepped, Botox is precisely administered into targeted muscles or appropriate tissue planes based on the medical indication.
Treatment options include the use of Botox Cosmetic, as well as Dysport and/or Xeomin. Your provider will help to determine which option is best suited for you, based on the treatment area, individual anatomy, and/or response to prior treatment.
Candidates are adults with ongoing symptoms of one of the conditions above, particularly when other treatments haven’t worked well enough. For migraine, the FDA-approved use covers chronic migraine, meaning headaches on 15 or more days a month.
Medical Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is also not recommended for people with certain neuromuscular disorders, an infection at the treatment site, or an allergy to any ingredient. Some symptoms need evaluation by a physician or specialist first. These include new or changing headaches, jaw locking, and sweating with a possible underlying cause.
Your provider reviews your symptoms, how often they happen and how severe they are, what you’ve tried before, your medical history, and your medications. Depending on your condition, the exam may include checking muscle strength and tenderness, jaw movement, or the pattern of sweating or redness. Your provider may ask you to keep a symptom or headache diary to guide treatment and track your progress.
Treatment is done in our office and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Hyperhidrosis treatment of the palms or soles can take longer. Numbing may be offered for sensitive areas. Your provider places a series of small injections with a fine needle. Most patients feel brief pinches, and the palms and soles are the most sensitive areas.
Most patients return to normal activities right away. Mild tenderness, redness, or small bruises at the injection sites usually fade within a few days. Some patients have a mild headache or temporary neck soreness. Avoid massaging the treated areas and avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. A follow-up visit lets your provider review your symptoms and adjust future dosing.
Symptom relief usually begins within 1 to 2 weeks. For sweating and jaw tension, relief may start sooner. Migraine improvement can take more than one treatment cycle to become clear. Relief typically lasts about 3 months for migraine and TMJ, and often 4 to 6 months or longer for underarm sweating. How long results last depends on your condition, the dose, and your individual response. Regular maintenance keeps symptom control consistent.
Medical Botox at Refyne is led by Dr. Brooklyn Buras, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner trained in primary care. That background shapes a symptom-first assessment that looks at your overall health, not only the injection sites. Every plan is individualized by condition, dose, and tissue depth. Refyne offers specialized techniques such as micro-Botox for rosacea, and your provider explains clearly which uses are FDA-approved and which are off-label.
Medical Botox is a nonsurgical treatment that uses a neuromodulator to calm overactive muscles, sweat glands, or pain and flushing signals.
Botox blocks the release of the chemical messengers that tell muscles to contract and glands to secrete. It also blocks some of the signals involved in pain and blood vessel widening.
Adults with ongoing TMJ pain, teeth grinding, chronic migraine, neck and shoulder tension, excessive sweating, or rosacea-related flushing may be candidates.
Most appointments take 15 to 30 minutes.
Most patients feel brief pinches. The palms and soles are more sensitive, and numbing may be used there.
Little to none.
Most patients notice relief within 1 to 2 weeks. It lasts about 3 months for many conditions and longer for sweating.
Possible side effects include bruising, tenderness, headache, and temporary muscle weakness near the treated area. Your provider reviews the risks specific to your treatment area.
